How Often Should You Clean Your House?

A clean home is a happy home, right? Trouble is, there’s so much to keep clean. The easiest way to keep track of what’s been done and what’s left to do is to create a matrix. Figure out what should be done daily, weekly, monthly, and more.

Your cleaning matrix will be unique to you and how you live your life. If you’re a passionate cook, you’re going to be cleaning your kitchen more often. Here are our recommendations for how often you should clean each part of your house.

To help you with this, we have put together a handy printable graphic to help you keep track of your cleaning. We recommend printing the graphic and putting it in a plastic page protector so that you can use a dry-erase marker to cross off tasks as you do them. Reset your Daily square each day, your Weekly box each week… you get the idea!

Your guide to a clean home.png

Daily

  • Dishes: You eat daily, so you’ll need to keep dirty dishes at bay daily, too.

  • Surfaces: Wipe away dirt and germs to keep your family safe.

  • Kitchen sink: Most of the gross daily stuff happens here.

  • Bathroom sink: Get rid of toothpaste stains and other gunk that lands on the sink every day.

Weekly

  • Dust: You’ll need to do this even more frequently if you have allergies.

  • Vacuum/sweep: Rid your space of pet hair, crumbs, and other debris.

  • Change sheets: There’s nothing better for sleep than fresh sheets.

  • Laundry: This goes hand-in-hand with changing your sheets. Add kitchen and bathroom towels to your weekly laundry load.

  • Clutter: Put everything in its place and you’ll feel the stress lift from your shoulders.

Twice Monthly

  • Clean out pantry/fridge: Prioritize the fridge over the pantry if you can’t fit both in.

  • Wipe down laptop: Laptop keyboards are gross. Period.

  • Tubs/showers: You can cut this number down to monthly if you’re working on a tub or shower that isn’t used that frequently (i.e., guest bath.)

  • Plants: Give your plants extra love! Remove dead leaves and give them an extra soak. Or if you have fake plants, clean the dust off and make sure there are no cobwebs forming.

  • Mop: After your weekly sweep, polish away that leftover grime.

Monthly

  • Dust blinds: This is where allergens hide!

  • Clean out vents: A fluffy wand will do the trick.

  • Dust light fixtures: Be gentle and check to see if any fixtures need repairs or light bulbs.

  • Oven: This can be done every other month depending on how much you cook.

  • Fridge: Once you’ve removed any expired food, wipe down shelves and defrost the freezer.

Every Six Months

  • Range hood: Your range hood collects more splashes and dust than you might think.

  • Ceiling fans: There’s dust hiding on the other side of those blades, so keep a fluffy wand with a long handle in your cleaning kit.

  • Windows: You can clean your window screens at this point, too.

  • Pillows: Put your pillows through the washer.

  • Closet: Divide unneeded items into “toss,” “donate,” and “sell” piles.
